Editor’s note: Creating IT Futures is introducing a new blog series called “Where Are They Now?” In it, we catch up with some of our first IT-Ready graduates to find out what’s new in their lives — and how their IT-Ready experience is helping shape their IT careers years after the fact.
Five years after graduating from IT-Ready in Cincinnati, Rachel Hopkins feels successfully established in her information technology career.
Creating IT Futures profiled Hopkins on its blog in April 2013, shortly after she completed her IT-Ready training. Prior to enrolling in IT-Ready, she had held a series of customer-service jobs — all of which tapped her desire to help people, but none of which was particularly rewarding or well paying.
Now a Business Analyst II in data management for The Hillman Group, Hopkins is becoming a subject matter expert as it pertains to customer master / customer and vendor set up in Oracle’s JD Edwards EnterpriseOne, an integrated applications suite of comprehensive enterprises resource planning software.
“After acquiring my CompTIA A+ certification through IT-Ready, I went on to earn my CompTIA Network+ certification,” Hopkins said. “Had I not had this opportunity, I don’t believe I would have been able to move into the technology industry without starting over in college.”
Hopkins said she continues to value her IT-Ready experience as well as the relationships she built during those weeks in the classroom.
“The steps IT-Ready taught me about troubleshooting have been applicable in every computer-related position I have held, including this one,” she said.
IT is a career path Hopkins can see taking for a lifetime — especially considering the flexibility and choices it offers individuals.
“I would love to make a transition into application development and work on apps for mobile phones,” she said. “I was thinking I should start with some Java Script training. Never stop learning and growing.”
IT-Ready produced a video profile of Hopkins shortly after she graduated from the program. You can see it by clicking here.
