Preparation is key to successful employment interviews

With its abundance of vacant positions and a shortage of potential recruits, the information technology industry offers tremendous opportunity for today’s job seeker.

Despite that favorable marketplace, job seekers still must prepare to make a great first impression. Career placement advisers working with IT-Ready graduates have compiled a set of best practices for successful job interviews.

Here are some highlights from those recommendations:
  • Research the company to better understand its culture and the work it does. Be prepared to offer examples of why you believe you’re the right candidate for that particular job.
  • Think through — and have good answers ready — for standard questions such as:
    • Who do you want to work in IT?
    • How did your training prepare you for this job?
    • Why do you want to work here?
  • Be prepared to demonstrate your thinking skills. Employers often deliberately ask questions that might garner an “I don’t know” or “I’ve never done that” type of response. Rather than say, “I don’t know,” tell the employer how you would approach finding the solution.
No matter how new or veteran IT professionals are, there’s always room for growth and advancement. To see all of the recommendations IT-Ready job placement advisers have put together for job interviews, click here.
