New York Academy of Sciences
A NextUp Partner
NextUp partners with NYAS to engage CompTIA’s network in volunteering and mentoring opportunities in New York City. Volunteers interface with the students attending Academy’s afterschool programs and camps at NYAS’ headquarters located at 7 WTC (250 Greenwich St.).
For instance, the Academy conducts a STEM Camp for middle-schoolers in February. In 2017, two dozen volunteers worked with 150 students as they rotated through different stations to generate data, work on laptops to learn Scratch and analyze their data. Campers also learned the skills sets for leadership and how to be a good leader in the STEM world. Volunteer managed stations and worked with the kids to complete the hands-on activities.
In August, CompTIA volunteers are needed for theAcademy’s Science Camp. Many youths do not know about the wide variety of tech careers and do not know a person in the tech industry personally. CompTIA volunteers meet the campers and talk about their tech careers and what they like about their jobs. Campers also learn the basics of computer coding by creating their own video games and explore the Laws of Motion through hands-on experiments.
In addition, CompTIA members and IT pros are invited to apply to the Academy’s other mentoring programs such as 1:1 virtual mentoring programs for STEM students from around the world. These programs include programs for high school and university students and require a year-long commitment for one to two hours a week.
Potential CompTIA volunteers can contact Joan Matz for more information.
