A Bright, Shining Star: Pomeroy Wins Polaris Award

Creating IT Futures awarded Pomeroy with the Polaris Award, given to a company that is leading the way toward information technology (IT) careers for those in need of career opportunities.

Pomeroy, a leading IT services company based in Hebron, KY, was recognized by the nonprofit foundation for taking on five newly trained IT workers from the foundation’s inaugural IT-Ready program, the most of any company in 2012.

"A career in IT changes everything for a person in today's challenging economy," said Charles Eaton, executive director of Creating IT Futures. "Creating opportunity requires IT industry leaders such as Pomeroy that are willing to give someone new to the IT field a chance to prove themselves.”

The IT-Ready program provides eight weeks of full-time technical and soft-skills training at no cost to participants, who are unemployed or under-employed individuals. Those who complete the program are invited to sit for the CompTIA A+ certification exams. Qualified graduates are then placed into six-month paid internships with area companies.

In the case of Pomeroy, all of the IT-Ready graduates received permanent positions right from the get-go.

“We were really looking for a partnership,” explained Rebecca Jones, manager of recruiting and workforce planning for Pomeroy. “We have a large need for level one, CompTIA A+ certified employees. And being able to place them in full-time benefited positions is a help to our community as well. So we saw it as a win-win.”

“The other thing I like about it,” said Jones, “is it’s a pilot with the opportunity to roll it out across the country.”

“It is very gratifying to see our graduates join the workforce and not only do well but excel in their IT careers,” said Chris Williams, IT-Ready employer recruiter. “We can’t overstate the importance of the companies who have gone out of their way to support the IT-Ready program with opportunities for our graduates.”

“I’m very proud that Pomeroy is able to help launch the IT careers of five of the thirteen graduates of this IT-Ready class,” said Chris Froman, Pomeroy president and CEO, during the foundation’s quarterly board meeting in November, 2012. Pomeroy hosted the board meeting and provided a tour of its world-class facility, where three of the IT-Ready graduates work. Two others have been assigned to work at client sites.

Said Froman: “We are fortunate to be the beneficiary of the Foundation’s commitment to training skilled IT workers and we look forward to continuing with this valuable program.”
