In previous posts, we defined the term “technologist,” a label that applies to people working in companies of all shapes and sizes across the country along a broad spectrum of industries – not just those that write software and make hardware. We explained that, while technologists have diverse interests and multifaceted personalities, most share five traits:
- A technologist thinks strategy first.
- A technologist has a passion for solving problems and a general sense of curiosity.
- A technologist sees technology in a constructive context.
- A technologist believes tech is about humans, not hardware.
- A technologist values respect, cooperation and collaboration.
When approaching a problem, a business team often will find creative solutions if each member brings a distinct perspective to the project. Problem-solving is core activity in tech careers, which is why tech companies want more diversity in employees. That can mean demographic diversity, but also diversity in thinking styles, career experience and/or skills.
For Mario Cadet, it’s hard to predict how each day will go. His responsibilities mean he handles different projects from different people, varying every day. A frantic email can reprioritize his entire day, but it’s that kind of variety he enjoys — the kind that keeps the day moving fast. “You never stop learning in IT,” Cadet said in his interview for Charles Eaton’s book How to Launch Your Teen’s Career in Technology: A Parent’s Guide to the T in STEM Education.
Cadet started as a technician, was promoted to a lead position and worked his way up to supervisor. How far you go in the industry depends on you. “The sky’s the limit,” he said.
Now, he’s a service delivery manager with a daily schedule that involves managing people, interacting with clients and solving problems.
“It’s very rewarding,” he said. “I take seriously the position I have, and I really love it a lot.”
