In December, Creating IT Futures graduated another class of 20 students from our IT-Ready course in Edina, Minn. Out of those 20, six already have jobs at Ecolab, Atomic Data, Medtronic and OnCorps. More graduates are currently interviewing with CompuCom, HealthPartners, OurFamilyWizard.com and Tech Guru.
Like most of our new students, many had doubts before starting the program. Victor Hernandez questioned whether he should work full-time at his current job, even though he wanted a tech career. Abdiaziz Ali felt overwhelmed in the first week and said he almost didn’t make it. But each of them, along with 18 of the graduates, persevered with the help of Creating IT Futures staff and their classmates.
Their success can be highlighted with the example of graduate Anthony Garcia who came to IT-Ready after working the 4am shift at Target while working two other jobs. By graduation, Garcia already had a new job at Atomic Data, launching his tech career.
During graduation, student Suzanne Sederstrom mentioned how her life was in a transition before IT-Ready. “My life is back on track now,” said Sederstrom.
Ge Moua praised IT-Ready while accepting his graduation certificate, “This was a diverse group and a great opportunity to find something new and jumpstart my career.”
Fellow graduate Abraham Tsehaye worked at Seagate after studying chemistry in college, but later he was laid off and needed to restart his career. “This class makes me feel like I’m full. Our teacher Brandon makes the class feel like home,” said Tsehaye.
IT-Ready instructor Brandon Steel advised the graduates, “Success is a state of mind, not an end-point or a journey. Don’t stop becoming your best self after you leave IT-Ready.”
Graduation speaker James Afdahl, VP of business services and state relationship manager, GED Testing Service, told the graduates, “Use the problem-solving skills you learned in class. They go beyond tech. Those techniques mixed with the tech skills you gathered in IT-Ready will propel you forward.”
Alexandra Betzler may have summed up the enthusiasm from the students at graduation best, saying, “I’m a life-long learner, and I’ve learned so much from everyone in this class. My confidence is way high and I’m ready to start the next chapter of my life.”
