Meet Carolyn O’Hearn, HTML specialist for CompTIA

One wouldn’t assume that computer coding and creativity go hand in hand — but for Carolyn O’Hearn, an HTML specialist at CompTIA, they do.

“There’s a lot of creativity that can go into it sometimes, like how you handle images, the layout of the page, building things up from scratch,” she said.

Her biggest challenges occur when she encounters an aspect of programming language she isn’t as familiar with, which requires that she conduct research on her own.

“It’s sometimes a little challenging, but not to the point where I can’t handle it,” she said. “The challenges are a lot of fun for me, actually. It’s like a puzzle to play with.”

And seeing her work emerge as a new web page or website is rewarding, O’Hearn said.

O’Hearn’s perspective on the benefits of an upwardly mobile career in information technology (IT) is part of a video series sponsored by CompTIA , the IT industry association, and its philanthropic arm, the /home">Creating IT Futures Foundation.

The video series allows viewers to see first-hand what different technology jobs are like. Cybersecurity, networking, web design, customer support, data analysis and project management are just some of the careers featured.

According to Burning Glass, the IT industry had nearly one million job openings as of June 2015 — many of which go unfilled because of a lack of qualified candidates. IT careers offer stability, flexibility and unlimited potential, plus salaries well above the national median wage, which is great for families.
