Are all IT training programs truly fulfilling employer needs?

With more than half a million IT jobs currently vacant — and another 2 million such jobs expected to be created within the next decade — a new report from JPMorgan Chase & Co. reveals that the rapidly growing and quickly evolving tech-training field faces challenges for developing the skilled workforce that our economy needs.

The report — Tech Jobs for All: Exploring the Promise and Pitfalls of Technology Training in the United States — offers a comprehensive look at programs designed to teach IT skills, ranging from apprenticeships to online courses to bootcamps.

The report is part of JPMorgan Chase’s $250 million, five-year New Skills at Work initiative to address the continuing mismatch between employers’ needs and the skills of job seekers. The report is the first resource of its kind to classify and offer readily accessible information about the various types of IT training programs that exist, the different talent development needs that these programs seeks to meet, and the lessons learned from the tech training field.

The training of IT workers for today’s and tomorrow’s workplace needs is a complicated and multi-faceted issue, and there is no one right way or easy fix for addressing it; moreover, it requires understanding, cooperation and collaboration among all stakeholders involved. I commend JPMorgan Chase for conducting research that helps all of us who working to bring new and well-trained IT employees into the workplace.
