  • Tech High School to Launch First Graduates

    In some respects, the senior class at Chicago Tech Academy is no different from soon-to-be-graduates of other public high schools. The 70 seniors (the school’s first since the academy debuted in 2008) have asked a Top 40 personality to speak at their graduation ceremony, and they are thinking about doing a goofy dance before they walk onto the stage to accept their diplomas.

  • CITFF contributes $25,000 to Year Up Chicago

    The Creating IT Futures Foundation has contributed $25,000 to Year Up Chicago to help support volunteer engagement in the community. Year Up is using the contribution to support a local non-profit who could benefit from the work of a Year Up intern with strong technology and communication skills but not be able to afford one, said Alan Anderson, executive director at Year Up Chicago.

  • Reuse, Recycle: IT-Ready Mentor Gene Plaskon

    When “disposable” starts applying to people, society is taking the idea of convenience a little too far. So says Gene Plaskon, a mentor to students in the IT-Ready program. “I’ve noticed that in our society, when people get older, they become more disposable,” he said. “And that’s hard for people, especially those who have been working all of their lives and suddenly find themselves unemployed. I wouldn’t trade my life experience for all the college education in the world.”

    Theodore Hysell, 25, of Minneapolis had just completed his training with the Creating IT Futures Foundation’s IT-Ready program when he faced his next crucial challenge: an interview with his first potential employer. For advice, he turned to a person he’d never even met in person: his IT-Ready Mentor, Rick Shafer, a senior IT technician with Avaya Communication in Asheville, N.C.
