    When IT-Ready Apprentice Program graduate Ngina Baggett, 26, posed for a close-up this summer, she was a little bit apprehensive. “You’re going to put my photo where?” Just a few weeks later, her photo was on three billboards in Minnesota’s Twin Cities. “I love it!” said Baggett, who recently began a full-time technical support position that she credits IT-Ready’s training with helping her to land.

    Last week a group of teenagers took the stage to receive an important piece of paper that evades so many young people these days — and, no, it wasn’t a diploma. They were handed their very own business cards. The teens — most of them from disadvantaged households in the poorest neighborhoods of Houston — are participants in Genesys Works, a successful and growing nonprofit organization that prepares high school students for senior-year internships with large corporations.

  • Pathways to Success

    The Creating IT Futures Foundation has completed the first issue of a trial publication designed to encourage new audiences to information technology (IT) careers. Pathways uses engaging graphics and feature articles of successful minority and female workers in the field to introduce new audiences to the IT industry, which suffers from a skills gap and worker shortage. The first issue is full-color and 16 pages.

  • Creating Success Stories Among Urban Youth: Year Up

    Once a high school drop-out and teen mom, Brenda Arroyo now does desktop support for the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. If you want to see the new face of success, meet Brenda Arroyo. As a Chicago teenager, Arroyo became pregnant and dropped out of school. She earned her GED, but even then she didn’t have a high statistical chance of earning a livable wage anytime soon.
