A number of national and international salary surveys have come out during Q1 2013 and we are pleased that they are reporting positive increases for those working in the IT sector. Moreover, some tech professionals have seen an over five percent increase in salaries since this time last year — the biggest jump in over a decade. According to Dice.com, tech professionals earned an average annual wage of $85,619 in 2012. That’s the kind of livable wage that families need in order to save for the future while meeting their month to month obligations.
In the same survey, when asked the primary reason for the increase in compensation, 36 percent of technology professionals tagged company actions — such as merit or company-wide raises and internal promotions — as the main reason. Meanwhile, 19 percent said their salary increases came as a result of changing jobs.
Janco, a management consulting firm that focuses on management information systems and information technology, found in their January 2013 report that IT compensation has increased by nearly two percent over that past year, with the largest increases seen in mid-sized companies.
Some of the highest demand — and best opportunities for those just entering the IT job market — are in positions associated with quality control, records management and data center operations management.
Robert Half Technology also reports increases in both salary and benefits for IT professionals, and points out that benefits on top of salary are what make up a compensation package that can attract and retain skilled technology professionals. In addition to paying competitively, companies must offer great benefits (think health plans, flexible work hours and paid time-off) as well as offering professional development opportunities.
Bottom line? If you are looking for a career field with great wages and upward mobility, IT continues to be a winning choice.
